Picking Targets

How do you pick you targets? When looking for targets there are an overwhelming amount of choices. Targets come in all shapes and sizes so how are you suppose to chose?

The first target shown is a green B-27 target. A B-27 is a standard target that is about 2 feet by 4 feet and represents a human torso. This target is nice and big and is a great option if you are shooting at longer ranges and want a target easier to see. Up close the size helps you see a wider group if you are practicing shooting fast patterning a shotgun. This target also includes scoring rings. These rings let you apply a grade to your shooting and are great for tracking improvement.

The second target shown is a much smaller target (hand for scale) and includes many places to aim at. Is is a great option for closer range, practicing sight transition, or shooting with your pals when you won't want to change the target with every shooter.

The next target shown has evenly spaced grid lines. These gridlines both help you measure groups but are also great for zeroing, or sighting in, your firearm. This one is specific for M16 style rifles, but there are many many options.

These targets are just some examples of what's out there, and only some of what I take to the range. At the end of the day, targets just give you a place to aim, so look around and see what you think is right for you. You don't need to spend lots of money for the nicest targets you can find, and in fact in a pinch I'll draw an x on a piece of paper and shoot that. The most important thing is to handle your firearm safely.
